Gynaecology and advanced laparoscopic surgery:

I’m an advanced laparoscopic and robotic gynaecological surgeon, holding the highest level of accreditation (RANZCOG/AGES Level 6) in Advanced Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery in Australia. I currently am a board director of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopic and Surgery Society (AGES) that promotes the safest and highest standards of clinical and minimally invasive surgical care for women. Recently I was a board member representing the Pacific Rim/India/Asia region of the American Association of Gynaecological Laparoscopists (AAGL), which is the largest international medical association advancing health care for women through excellence in clinical practice, education, research, innovation, and advocacy. I’m frequently an invited speaker at domestic and international conferences on gynaecological conditions, such as endometriosis and adenomyosis.

The board positions I’m on provide an exceptional platform to engage with leading surgeons all around the world, sharing ideas and building relationships to further strengthen research and education in gynaecological surgery. They also provide a platform for advocacy for women working towards equity in healthcare, which is a major interest of mine.

All women should have access to safe, minimally invasive surgery, as it provides enormous benefits including faster recovery, less pain and minimal (if any) scarring. The alternative is open surgery, which should now only be reserved for special circumstances, such as suspicion of cancer.

Dr Amani Harris - Surgery

My passion for improving access for women to minimally invasive surgery and love for surgical teaching, led to becoming a co-founder and Director of Training at the AGES accredited, Sydney Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery unit (SMIGS). I’m also a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales.

I perform advanced laparoscopic surgery at Kareena Private Hospital, The Sutherland Hospital and robotic surgery at St George Private Hospital.

RESEARCH

I view research as an invaluable tool in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, to continually revise best evidence-based practices and to unlock many of the unknowns that still exist. I’ve published a number of research articles relating to endometriosis and fibroids and continue to lead an active research unit through the SMIGS society. I recognise the rapidly evolving modern era and how important it is for specialists to be active and up-to-date with emerging research in order to offer their patients the latest evidence-based care.
